George De Forest collection, 1548, 1604-1945.

The George De Forest Collection contains diaries, journals, notebooks, commonplace books, account books, correspondence, military records, printed volumes, and manuscripts on subjects in British, French, American, and Latin American history. The collection includes the papers of John McMillian, an attorney of Edinburgh, Scotland; John Plumbe, a nobleman of Tong Hall, Yorkshire, England; and James H. Stirling, a Scottish philosopher. It contains the personal journals of Martha Jervis (1799-1881); the journals of Adam Black, publisher and Liberal Member of Parliament for Edinburgh (1859-1866); the diaries and journals of several named and anonymous British travelers abroad (1815-1907); and assorted correspondence, pay records, and warrants for the British army (1733-1895). The collection also contains diaries, journals, and account books kept by individuals and firms in Scotland (1639-1924); diaries kept by Britons in India and other colonies (1779-1902); and various printed volumes from Britain and the United States (1725-1923). It also includes a large assortment of British, French, American, and Latin American letters and manuscripts on several subjects, especially art, literature, and military history for the entire period of the collection.
